The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
