The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode series created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
