'Living a Nightmare': Relatives of Missing Teens Await Information After Alpine Blaze
The loved ones of young people lost after a devastating fire at a venue in a Switzerland's ski resort are enduring an agonising period of uncertainty for answers and appealing for clues about their loved ones online.
The inferno devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the small hours of the first day of the year. Verified images reveal the ceiling igniting as beverages with sparklers are held aloft.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to identify the victims of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of 40 people and wounded another scores more. A spokesperson said on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been accounted for, with efforts still underway to identify the final individuals.
In the meantime, relatives have been taking to the internet to request any news about their loved ones who were in attendance that fateful night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Unaccounted For
The fate of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are currently unknown, according to an heartfelt request from his family.
The resident of Lutry near Lausanne, told a publication that she had gone back to Lausanne to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the same in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"I'm living a nightmare, a horror. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she said.
She explained that some of his friends had been discovered with burns covering nearly half their bodies. "It's indescribable; they went through a terrifying ordeal."
The Italian government has confirmed that a number of of its nationals have not been located.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage junior golfer, originally from Italy but now residing in Dubai.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is deceased, without directly referencing the tragedy, paying tribute to a "talented young man who carried with him passion and authentic values."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Further Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, 16, is likewise among the missing. His parent told reporters that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him informed me they escaped after the fire erupted and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he lost sight of him," she explained, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers stated, "I've always been struck by his good nature and smile, coupled with great maturity. Often offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Swiss and Greek nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also present on that night, according to reports.
Her brother has posted an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no news" regarding the 15-year-old or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her other nation say they are closely watching the case.
