Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about seriously considering a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as California's leader ends in January 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic
He has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would expand the party's congressional seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy revealed a strategy to pull taxpayer dollars from California and warned revoking the authority to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy said, following a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented commercial driver that caused fatalities and four injuries.
His administration highlighted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was blocking additional funds from California for ignoring linguistic standards for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand federal law," the governor's team responded in a previous statement responding to Duffy's threats. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."
Public Opinion and Political Future
A this month's study found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that Newsom should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
