Compensation and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 soon, bolsters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but showing a notable improvement from the year before campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, surpassing the longstanding record for a NPB hitter formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was limited to a partial schedule due to an side strain. Even with fanning 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 HRs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
International Pedigree
Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the final against the USA, he blasted a tying homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's eventual championship win.
The lefty slugger is set to be formally introduced at a media availability on the coming Monday.
