Chelsea's Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Pre-Match Period as The 'Toughest Two Days' at the Club

Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca revealed that the run-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton represented "the worst 48 hours" he has experienced at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian offered a somewhat cryptic comment in his after-game press conference despite earning a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points propelled Chelsea back into the English top flight's top four, perhaps lightening the atmosphere after a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's winless run to four fixtures.

But, when asked about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his displeasure over the previous two days within the organization.

"How the squad want to develop has been excellent and this is the explanation why I commend them - because with numerous challenges, they are doing very well after a tricky week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the last 48 hours have been the most difficult because several people failed to back us."

Pressed on the specifics, the former Leicester City manager elaborated: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn't support me and the team."

When asked if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I adore the fans and we are extremely content with the fans."

Injury & Disciplinary Crisis

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent fitness and disciplinary problems, noting they had been missing key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two significant injuries.

"I really praise the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them minus Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing exceptionally. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season minus our best player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people outside to recognize because the commitment from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's win over Everton strengthened their position in fourth in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was ambiguous who or what caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the most difficult of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that timeframe, the coach had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at Cobham, attended a pre-game press briefing where he appeared relaxed, and secured a win over an in-form Everton side.

It was unclear whether any particular media reports had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to deny that it was an matter involving the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully embrace him since his arrival from Leicester during July 2024.
